MAINTENANCE TIPS: Bearing preload
Bearing preload is set by tightening the axle nut against two tapered cone-shaped bearings. As the nut is tightened, the hub assembly becomes firm, and any looseness in the system is eliminated. Once the correct preload is established, a locking device is installed to keep the axle nut from moving.
First, torque the adjusting nut to 200 lb-ft to fully seat the bearing components. While applying this torque, be sure to rotate or oscillate the wheel to ensure the rollers are properly seated against the large rib of the cone.
Next, loosen the adjusting nut by one full turn, or until it feels free of resistance. This step begins the process of setting the final end play.
Then, torque the adjusting nut to 50 lb-ft while rotating the wheel hub assembly. This is where the actual end play is established.
After that, back off the inner (adjusting) nut by the recommended amount — for example, 1/6 of a turn on a front steer axle with 12 threads per inch. Consult the chart provided by Timken for the precise back-off specification.
Finally, on a single-nut system, install a cotter pin. On a double-nut system, install a jam nut and tighten it to the correct torque, which varies depending on the nut size.
